| Network Deployment |
|
The creation of the network has different phases. The first phase, which took place between 2005 and 2007, covered 21 towns of the mining regions of Asturias. It was financed by the administration of the Principality, from the “mining funds”. It covers Tineo, Cangas del Narcea, Tuilla, Blimea, El Entrego, Sotrondio, Rioturbio, Barredos, Pola de Laviana, Santa Eulalia de Morcín, Santa Cruz de Mieres, Figaredo, Turón, Ujo, Pola de Lena, Villanueva, Caborana, Moreda, Oyanco, Cabañaquinta and Felechosa, a total of over 31,000 homes. The first 15 towns started using the network December 2007, whereas the other 6 could not get connected until October 2009 due to the unavailability of the trunk network in the Aller valley till that time. In 2007, as requested by the local government of the Principality of Asturias and as part of the “Llanes, Paraíso Digital” project, from the “Plan Avanza” initiative, GIT included the central area of the Llanes region in the network. This connected 1,500 homes to the network. In 2008, as part of the agreement to promote competition, employment and welfare (ACEBA in Spanish), the local government of the Principality of Asturias requested GIT to carry out the expansion of the network to include the towns of Colombres, Celorio, Posada de Llanes, Sevares, Villamayor, Nava, Infiesto, Arriondas and the uncovered areas of Llanes on the east of Asturias and Soto del Barco, Muros del Nalón, San Esteban de Pravia, Luarca, Navia, Puerto de Vega, La Caridad, Tapia de Casariego, Castropol, Figueras and Vegadeo on the central and western coast of the region. This expansion will take place between 2008 and 2011 and will cover an additional 19,000 homes. Finally, in 2009, as part of the “Plan Avanza”, the local government of the Principality entrusted GIT with the expansion the network over four smaller towns with populations between 500 to 1000 inhabitants (Porrúa, Santa Eulalia de Cabranes, Villallana and Corigos). Thanks to this latest project, the ASTURCÓN network will offer broadband services to 45 towns, with a total of over 51,000 homes being covered (9.5% of the total number of homes in Asturias) by the end of 2010, when all phases of the expansion are finished. |
