GIT is short for “Gestión de Infraestructuras Públicas de Telecomunicaciones del Principado de Asturias S.A.”, a public company which is 100% owned by the Principality of Asturias.
Its creation was authorized by the first additional regulation of the Law 6/2004 together with the General Budgets of 2005, approved by local government of the Principality of Asturias on December 28th   2004.

 

Its social objective is the “establishment and operation of telecommunication networks, their associated resources and the provider of electronic communication services to third parties.  In this respect, the Company will at least run, the public networks of senders and repeaters and the access to broadband propriety of the Principality of Asturias”.

 

The functions of the GIT can be summarized as follows:

• Managing and maintaining the infrastructures, systems and services of telecommunications and its competence.
• Coordinating the planning of the telecommunication infrastructures deployment of the different public administrations, as well as the technical support provided to them.
• Designing future strategies, analysing the viability of telecommunication projects, and elaborating infrastructure planning proposals, systems and telecommunication services.
• Building, introducing and launching any type of networks and telecommunication services.
• Promoting the availability of high quality telecommunication infrastructures at affordable prices in the Principality of Asturias.

The first infrastructure managed by the GIT is the Network (Red Astur de Comunicaciones Ópticas Neutras), in operation since April 2007.
